Heather, Did any one ever tell you you're a little bossy? :-) I didn't comment because I didn't remember but I kind of think we always had more than 30, but I went to elementary school in California and it always seemed like the rooms were packed, and obviously I never got enough attention :-).
My 3rd grade in Washoe County (Reno) was the start of "switching" classes which as I reflect it was totally ability grouping. I was in the smart classes- yay! And we got the sex ed lessons for a week- yes, in 3rd grade we got the talk and a little booklet!
I honestly never knew how many kids were in my elementary school classes. I did talk to Whitney Stirling, though, and she currently has 18 kids in her 2nd grade class.
I think there was usually around 30. I remember that was how many treats you had to bring if you were bringing them. I think that's why I was so baffled when all the hoopla about class size began. We always had big classes.
